Fight Food Waste by Storing Fruits and Vegetables Properly!


Storing fruits and vegetables efficiently can contribute to reducing food waste while also helping you save money. Below, you'll find tips on storing some common fruits and vegetables. Don't see one listed? Let us know in the comments below, and we'll work on adding it to the list.

Apples 🍎:

  • Store in the refrigerator crisper drawer. Keep separate from other produce.

    Asparagus:

  • Trim ends and stand upright in a container with about an inch of water.


    Avocados
    🥑:

  • Ripe avocados can be refrigerated to slow down ripening; unripe ones at room temperature.


    Berries (Strawberries, Blueberries, Raspberries)
    🍓🫐🍇:

  • Wash with vinegar and water (1:3 ratio) to remove bacteria.

  • Air dry or pat gently with a paper towel.

  • Store in a container lined with a paper towel to absorb excess moisture.


    Bell Peppers
    🫑:

  • Store in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. If cut, place in an airtight container.

    Broccoli 🥦:

  • Store in the refrigerator crisper drawer. Wrap it loosely in a damp paper towel or place it in a perforated plastic bag to maintain moisture. Keep it separate from fruits and vegetables that produce ethylene gas (Apples, Bananas, Avocados, Tomatoes, Peaches, Pears, Plums, Apricots, Mangoes, Cantaloupes). Use within 3 to 5 days for best freshness.


    Brussels Sprouts:

  • Keep in the refrigerator. Trim stems and store in a paper bag in the crisper drawer for optimal freshness.


    Carrots
    🥕:

  • Cut tops off and store in a container filled with water.

  • Keep in the fridge, changing water every few days to maintain freshness.

  • Water storage can help revive limp carrots!


    Celery:

  • Cut end and add to a jar of water. Store in fridge. This method can also help revive limp celery!


    Citrus Fruits (Oranges, Lemons, Limes)
    🍊🍋🍈:

  • Store at room temperature or in the refrigerator. Keep loose or in a mesh bag.


    Cucumbers
    🥒:

  • Store in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator. If wrapped, ensure ventilation.


    Eggplant
    🍆:

  • Store at room temperature or in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator.


    Garlic
    🧄:

  • Store in a cool, dark place with good ventilation. Avoid refrigeration.


    Green Onions:

  • Place in a jar with a little water, roots submerged.


    Herbs (Parsley, Cilantro, Basil)
    🌿:

  • Trim ends, place in a jar with water, and store in the refrigerator.


    Kale:

  • Place in a jar with a little water. Store in refrigerator.


    Lettuce and Leafy Greens
    🥬:

  • Wash and dry thoroughly.

  • Wrap in a clean, dry towel or paper towel and place in a container.

  • Store in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator.


    Mushrooms
    🍄:

  • Store in a paper bag in the refrigerator to avoid moisture and mold.


    Onions
    🧅:

  • Store in a cool, dry place with good airflow. Keep separated from potatoes.


    Pineapple
    🍍:

  • Store a whole pineapple at room temperature until ripe. Refrigerate leftover pieces.


    Potatoes
    🥔:

  • Store in a cool, dark place with good ventilation. Avoid storing near onions.


    Tomatoes
